This is the first of six hour-long improvs recorded in the summer of 2005 which were used to construct both THINGS ARE REALLY GOOD AS THEY REALLY SHOULD BE and THE RECIDIVIST. The blueprint for the improvs was inspired by “Free Jazz: An Improvisation By The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet”, an album-length jazz improv in which many different sections are linked by a repeated theme. Our theme was based on a two-chord structure lifted from the Trippo Marx song Baby Steps. We had no idea what to call it once we recorded it so we just referred to it as “the baby”, and the name stuck when we finally cut the improv into sections and used titles suggestive of the four stages of human growth.

This is the second of six hour-long improvisations recorded in the summer of 2005 which were used in the making of THINGS ARE REALLY GOOD AS THEY REALLY SHOULD BE and THE RECIDIVIST. This one was heavily inspired by the novel "Martian Time-Slip" by Philip K. Dick, and the theme is a variation of the main chord sequence in the song Gubble Gubble from HIP EPONYMOUS.

This is the third of six hour-long improvisations recorded in the summer of 2005 which were used in the making of THINGS ARE REALLY GOOD AS THEY REALLY SHOULD BE and THE RECIDIVIST. The theme for this one was a simple chord sequence that Krich suggested and it became the main motif for the character of the Recidivist. The shorter album version is edited from this improv, which quite accidentally & organically tells the tale of a career criminal ending his career of crime in a predictably cinematic way: going out in a blaze of stylized violence because it’s preferable to going back to prison, yet with nagging doubts that he might should be in a touchy-feely indie film instead.

The idea for this improv was to do something spacey and ambient. Upon listening back, we created a loose narrative for the piece based on the idea of two god-like underwater beasts warring over the fate of the universe, unknown to humans except for a few operatives in the know. One of these is Bawk Bawk Hendershot, an uber-competent everyman utterly at the mercy of forces beyond his control. The story begins with him being thrown into the ocean from a military ship. Lost at sea, he survives by clinging to a buoy, while the ship commander realizes his subordinates have erroneously disposed of a man who can be of use. The ship searches for him, but cannot find him because a nautilus-shaped submarine of unknown origin emerges from the water to rescue him. The craft is autopiloted remotely and he has has no means of control. After a long dive into a deep dark trench where broken vessels litter the sea bottom (lured to their doom by the eerie siren sounds of the deep), the nautilus comes to a full stop for hours, as if waiting for some cue. Hendershot begins to freak out during the long wait until his mind slowly becomes overwhelmed by the psychic emanations of the two beasts, the Glimmung and the Leviathan. Bawk Bawk somehow manages to negotiate a compromise between the two, then hot-wires the nautilus and sneaks away from them during their instense psychic deliberations. But the nautilus emerges from the depths too quickly and Hendershot winds up with a bad case of the bends. His pursuers find the nautlius and take him to a decompression chamber where he is subjected to instense interrogations by the paranoid ship commander.

The seeds of the 2012-2013 Infernal Garage project were planted at this simple session, instigated at the behest of my friend Funkmotor who had just acquired a drum set for his son J. P. (aka Mr. Drumbot) and was itching to jam. This set features Mr. Drumbot’s debut recording Introducing Mr. Drumbot, and J. P. would go on to appear on most of the Infernal Garage sessions in some capacity.

After we played the first improvisation, Funkmotor was tuning the bass that Scrapegoat was using and came up with the bass line for the next improvisation, from which the song The Door Is Still Open evolved. This song was a regular part of the set from this day forward. In addition, Krich contributed some brand new lyrics for Scrapegoat’s Bleat. The session was attended by our friend Randy Akin, but he did not have his gear with him so he did not perform, but he did perform with us on two subsequent occasions.

This session was recorded in Funkmotor’s front room, rather than the garage as was customary. Mr. Drumbot was talking about the “auxiliary band hall” at his school, but we misheard him to say “auxiliary band hole”. We were so tickled by the phrase we dubbed the room the Auxiliary Band Hole.
